Leadership & Excellence Analyst Program (LEAP)
Your potential is just as important to us as your experience.
Our Leadership & Excellence Analyst Program (LEAP) develops diverse, entry-level, future leaders through mentorship, hands-on experience, and exposure to a wide range of the bank’s client servicing and operations functions. You bring grit, determination and coachability, and we’ll provide the technical training and professional skills to help you kickstart your career in City National’s largest division.
LEAPers gain insight into the services and operations that make up the nerve center of the bank and allow money to move safely and swiftly — such as detecting real-time fraud, processing payments across electronic platforms, and onboarding and servicing accounts. That experience, along with instruction in executive presence and developing a management style, is designed to shape LEAPers into leaders.
Who should apply: Problem-solvers and proven leaders. Recent graduates (1-2 years out) and seniors graduating in May or June of 2024. Students and graduates from HBCUs and Hispanic-serving institutions, as well as DACA students, are encouraged to apply.
What It Offers
LEAP offers competitive pay, employee benefits and the possibility of an annual bonus. It also provides one-on-one access to senior leaders, formal mentorship and professional development. LEAP is a recognized source of rising talent and a springboard to a successful career at City National.
How It Works
LEAP is an 18-month program with three rotations, each lasting six months, and based in either Los Angeles, Phoenix or Newark, Del. Analysts get full immersion in our Banking & Investment Services division. You’ll start with the fundamentals, then take on an increasing amount of project-based work.
Successfully completing the program will make you a strong candidate for a future role.
Applications are no longer being accepted for the 2024 program. Please check back in January 2025.

You can expect plenty of face time with our senior leadership. We work hard to give our interns opportunities to connect with and learn from our executives — it’s one way our internship program stands out from other banks’. Because we give our interns real, impactful work, we’re able to hire many of them back as full-time colleagues.
Internships are usually 10 weeks long and start the fourth week in May (for students on the semester system) or the fourth week in June (for students on the quarter system).
Most opportunities are hybrid and would require you to be within commuting distance of your specified location.
You should state your location preferences when you speak with a recruiter. Most positions are in the greater Los Angeles, New York and Phoenix areas, or in Newark, Del.

“I had the amazing opportunity to work in the Office of the President, performing data analysis to inform executives’ decision making. I gained so much from the internship — new technical skills, soft skills and especially, relationships with supervisors and colleagues who advocated for me to transition from an intern to a part-time contractor while I was finishing school. And now I am a full-time colleague!”

“I interned in 2021 and then was thrilled to be accepted to the banking analyst rotational program. I have had the opportunity to underwrite deals, attend client meetings and learn about the different products the bank has to offer. City National has done a great job providing us with training that will aid us throughout our careers.”

“Even as an intern, I felt like I was part of the team the first week. Any questions I had pertaining to my role or career growth were welcomed — I was even set up with a mentor on my first day. I had the opportunity to do really important work, like helping draft annual credit review reports by analyzing financial statements and market data to assess risk for loans. The best part is that I received a job offer and joined the bank full-time after graduation!”

“I have met so many wonderful and intelligent people at the bank and get to work on a variety of projects. I have seen new deals evolve from potential to funded, and have been able to work on each component from start to finish. It is enthralling to see companies go from prospects to clients in real time and to have phenomenal managers break down the complex processes along the way so I can contribute to our success.”

"When I started at City National as an intern, I had no industry experience, having only taken engineering courses in school. There are not a lot of companies that will give someone with no real-world experience an opportunity like this, especially in banking, so it meant a lot to me to have a chance to gain experience while doing work that I am so passionate about."
