Participates in the loan management process by providing credit and loan underwriting expertise to City National Bank's Food & Beverage Group ("F&B") within the National Corporate Banking division. F&B originates, closes and monitors direct and private-equity-backed transactions nationally by providing cash flow, asset-backed, and asset-based loans above $25 million to support companies that operate in the food and beverage sector. This role is within F&B's Credit function, whose primary mandate is to underwrite new transactions and manage existing exposure. The Sr. Credit Officer analyzes prospective loan transactions and credit worthiness of borrowers, validates the credit analysis prepared by the Credit Analysts, and provides opinions and recommendations regarding proposed credit and potential risks. The Sr. Credit Officer also analyzes, interprets, and evaluates financial statements, cash flow analysis, third party reporting, and is familiar with collateral values and enterprise valuations, loan structuring and documentation Ensures all due diligence and background evaluation is complete and thorough before Client Risk Recommendation ("CRR") is submitted. Actively mentors junior credit team colleagues. May function as the primary credit contact for clients and interact effectively with all levels of Bank personnel and outside contacts.

National Corporate Banking Division
As a member of our National Corporate Banking team, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference through a signature client experience. Provide expertise and financing solutions to larger middle-market and mid-corporate-sized companies, headquartered in the United States. By listening and understanding the client’s needs, the team delivers specialized service and industry-specific expertise to help companies grow and solve unique challenges.

  • Reviews loan requests, historical financial information, cash flow projections and third party reporting (e.g., Quality of Earnings Reports, confidential information memoranda, lender presentation, and financial statements provided by private equity firms, investment banks and/or prospective borrowers.
  • Prepares dynamic three-statement financial models in Excel with sensitivities run for expected and downside cases. Details supporting assumptions and justification for sensitivities.
  • Evaluates credit structure and terms; fully underwrites the approval documents consistent with policies and procedures; determines sources and uses of funds as well as primary and secondary sources of repayment for the credit facilities; analyzes industry data, competitive factors, historical performance, projected results, risks, and mitigating factors.
  • Ensures CRR contains a well-supported recommendation; the risk rating is correct and supported; and the data and analytics used to support the decision are accurate and calculated correctly.
  • Attends client meetings at Relationship Manager’s, Lead Credit Officer’s, or Credit Manager's request to facilitate delivery of credit product and/or assist in problem resolution. Contacts borrowers directly for information and details related to loan requests or modifications or clarification of financial materials and resources.
  • Provides balanced and appropriate credit guidance to Relationship Manager, Lead Credit Officer, and Credit Manager and collaborates in determining appropriate credit strategy.
  • Restructures loans and/or lines of credit in conjunction with Lead Credit Officer and Credit Manager as required. Assumes accountability for minimizing Bank losses.
  • Performs quarterly Problem Loan reporting for Criticized/Classified credits including: financial reviews of client's financial condition including monitoring covenants and conditions. Takes a proactive approach toward development and implementation of Action Plans. Escalates potential credit issues to Relationship Manager, Team Manager, and/or Credit Manager.
  • Has primary role in early problem loan identification and the timely and accurate changes in loan grades. Monitors and takes initiative to respond to past dues based in partnership with Relationship Manager.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge on all Bank lending policies and regulations. Confers with the Lead Credit Offices, Credit Manager and appropriate Bank personnel regarding new/existing lending requirements and regulations.
  • May coordinate loan documentation including working with outside counsel to obtain the correct, accurate loan documentation to ensure all loan are documented to fully protect the Bank’s interests in the credit relationship. Reviews collateral periodically to minimize credit exposure.
  • Reviews Credit Analyst’s work and/or prepares quarterly performance attestations, trend cards, and annual review for each assigned portfolio account.
  • Review Credit Analyst’s work and/or prepares approval documents for amendments, consents, and waivers clearly articulating the background, request, recommendation, and rationale. Coordinates with external counsel on the preparation of relevant legal documentation.
  • Participate in the training and development of the Credit Analysts on the team including financial statement analysis, business writing, cash flow modeling and enterprise valuation.



  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum 7 years experience in underwriting middle market to corporate banking clients and moderately-complex C&I credit required.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a banking or financial services environment required

Skills and Knowledge

  • Seven years' experience in underwriting large and complex C & I loans.
  • Requires extensive technical expertise and full knowledge of corporate banking credit principles, financial concepts and regular use of ingenuity and creativity in solving complex credit problems.
  • Communicates skillfully and effectively in both verbal/written forms.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and accountability for decision making.
  • Ability to work well independently to restructure loans and/or lines of credit as required.
Starting base salary: $130,990 - $170,155 per year. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. This job is eligible for bonus and/or commissions.
